Victor Alexandrov: The Syntagma of Matthew Blastares: The Destiny of a Byzantine Legal Code among the Orthodox Slavs and Romanians Forschungen zur byzantinischen Rechtsgeschichte, vol. 29 (Frankfurt am Main: Löwenklau-Gesellschaft, 2012)
presented by Ralph Cleminson, visiting professor of Slavonic Studies
The Syntagma is an alphabetical canon law code compiled by the Thessalonian monk Matthew Blastares around 1335. It was popular in different parts of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine world at least until the 19th century. The book traces the spread and use of the code among the Orthodox Slavs and Romanians from the 14th to late 17th century.
Victor Alexandrov is a graduate of the Medieval Studies Department (MA 1999, PhD 2004), and his book is based on the PhD thesis defended at the Department.
